Prefatory Wisdom
By THE EDITOR
OCCASIONALLY it is wise to have a preface to a book;
more often, probably, not to have one; but certainly it
is never wise to have an unwise preface. And now with respect
to wisdom and prefaces, the two wisest courses of action I can
contemplate are, first, to be foolish, and, secondly, to become
a patron of the Texas Folk-Lore Society.
As regards foolishness, there are divers professors of History-
branded with more letters than Nig Add's old cow-who
delight in nonsense but not one of whom will stand for a
gleam of it in history. Folk-lore in the hands of scholars bent
solely on comparative studies and analogues is fully as bad off
as history. It is as if those two great kings of the Hebrews had
lived only the latter half of their lives. Yet, as everybody knows,
in their palmy days-
King Solomon and King David
Led merry, merry lives
With their many, many sweethearts
And their many, many wives.
But when at last they both grew old,
With many, many qualms,
King Solomon wrote the Proverbs
And David wrote the Psalms.
I did not write "Los Animalitos." I don't have enough
