Houston
On September 23, 1840, Houston wrote Margaretfrom San Augustine.
In the letter he expressed his hope that she would hear no more slanders
of him. Although it did not bother him, he was upset because he knew it
distressed her. He also promised, "if you hear the truth, you never shall
hear of my being on a 'spree."' For a complete text of the letter see Writings,

reports which reached me that you were worse, but on inquiry I

This is $35,000 besides my riding horses. 3 are valuable and that I

I have here, we would suffer the agony of poverty. You my dear
have always enjoyed abundance, and were you destitute, you wou'd
be miserable and myself wretched!!! I know not what to write, nor
can I hope for happiness or tranquillity until I see you, and if I shou'd

heard, and will hear reports and should you regard them, you will
