BOOK NOTICES AND REVIEWS.
The paper of Mr. Bugbee on Slavery in Early Texas, published
in two parts, appearing respectively in the September and Decem-
ber numbers of Political Science Quarterly, is an excellent piece
.of hitorical work. One ,of its moist inportant features is the argu-
ment against the assumption made by certain historians such as
von HI-olst in supposing that the law of July 113, 1824, forbade the
further introduction ,of ,slaves into Texas. Another is the ,evidence
offered that the -exception ,of Texas from Guerreno's decree of 1829
abolishing slavery in Mexico was officially promulgated. The ar-
ticle is based largely upon material hitherbo unpublished, and in
fact unused, ,and constitutes a very seatisfactoy inltrodudtion to a
most important question.
Prominent Women of Texas, iby Elizabeth B'roloks, "manufac-
tured" by the Warner Company, Akron, Ohio, is a compilation of
sketches of about one hundred and fifty well known women of the
State. Not claiming the list to be complete, the author states
that "many distinguished in their several spheres have been neces-
sarily omitted."
Under the title of "Wives of Texas Presidents" appear the names
of Mrs. Sam Houston and Mrs. Anson Jones; while Mrs. Rusk, Mrs.
Lamar, Mrs. Fannin, Mrs. Sherman, and Mrs. Wharton are classed
as "Wives of Military Heroes." All the other names are arranged
under the following titles: Pioneers, In the Realms of Art, Well
Known Vocalists, Prominent Authors, Journalism in Texas, Edu-
cators, Physicians, Temperance Leaders, Dramatic, Wives of Prom-
inent Men, The Uncrowned Queen of the West, Representative
Women, and Well Known in Social Life.
The sketches are short, but contain a deal of matter well worth
preserving in print.
