"It is impossible fo'r us not to have your sympathies arousedd -in
behalf of this gallant people, 'and earnestly to, desire. that they may
issue from, their present struggle for the dearest .and most invaluable
of a(ll rights, in a manner the most successful ,and. triumnphan!t.
"Their cause is 'a good one -it is based upon the immiutiable foun-
da'tion of natural right and justice-they are not invaders, but
defenders of their constitutional rights, their homes, their 'altars:.
Who, then, 'anxious for the establishment ,of free land 'liberal prin-
ciples in 'Texas--in which will b.e sown those seeds that will event-
ually lead to the revolution of the whole o'f besotted and benighted
Mexico, that will not contribute his Isympathies not -only, but his
might and' hips, influence for the successful atta.inlment ,of s'uoh praise-
worthy ends. 'There are men who, have fallen in defense of T'exas'
liberty of whom history will preserve proud 'and enduring ,memo-
rials. 'The names of Travis, Crockett, Bowie, Milanm and others
will fall to, posterity as those who. nobly fought ,and died, martyrs
to their devoted attachment t'o the cause 'of humanity and right,
and their ,stern, unyielding hatred to, oppression and tyranny.
"For ourselves, we feel convinced that the recent disastrous attack
on San Antonio, ,land the inhuman butchery of those who, survived
the assaultl, will in the eind prove -of signal service to the cause of
Texas, in effecting 'a 'more ,determined and, successful opposition
than ever to the progress of the usurping S'anta Anna. We enter-
tlain no fears ,as to the result."

* * * "In the 'meantime, although we invoke no infraction of
the treaties .established .and recognized between Mexico and our
country, a'nd would not render ourselves 'amenable to the laws by
raising troops or doing ,wheat might be regarded ,as violating solemn
coampacts-still we do .say, that regarding the contest in 'which
the Tlexans are engageld ,as a, struggle for the most invaluable rights
of God to man, a straggle against inhmian oppression and tyranny,
they are entitled to our warmest swmplathies, our best wi+she's, nay
more, to -our private contributions for their deserving need."147
