the United States they captured Bexar in December; and practi-
cally alone they won the battle of San Jacinto.
NOTE.-By an act of the Fifth Congress, December 30, 1840, it was
provided that all soldiers who entered San Antonio between the 5th and
10th of December, 1835, and actually assisted in the capture of the place,
should be entitled to 320 acres of land, "the same as though they had
served out their time of three months." The preamble assigns as a rea-
son, for this law, that all but a very few claimants had received their
lands by authority of previous secretaries of war, and it was not consid-
ered just that these few should be deprived of their claims.-Gammel,
