Refugio: A History, representing twenty years of study, re-
search, and writing by Association member Hobart Huson, is
scheduled for spring publication. The 9oo-page, two-volume
history deals with the people of the section, the rise and decline
of local Indian tribes, Captain Philip Dimitt's garrison at Goliad,
Colonel James W. Fannin's ill-fated regiment, Civil War military
operations between Matagorda and Brownsville (including the
Corpus Christi and Rio Grande Valley areas), the rise of the
Gulf Coast's cattle industry, and the Texas State Guard. The
work is also concerned with the development of the ten littoral
leagues of the Texas coast which constituted the empresa of the
Power and Hewetson Colony and thus is a history of portions
of Refugio, Victoria, Goliad, Bee, Nueces, San Patricio, and
Aransas counties prior to their detachment from present-day
Refugio County. Since 1944 bound copies of the original manu-
script have been available to historians in the University of
Texas library and the Library of Congress. The first edition
printing will be limited to five hundred sets and will sell for
$25. Sales are being handled by the Dawgwood Library at Re-
fugio, and after initial costs are reimbursed, the proceeds will
be paid to the regimental fund of the gth Regiment of the Texas
State Guard Reserve Corps, of which Colonel Huson is com-
manding officer.
Through the cooperation of Miss Myrtle Roberts, some five
hundred copies of the Junior Historian magazine were distributed
at the thirty-second annual meeting of the National Council for
the Social Studies held in Dallas in November. Miss Roberts, a
history teacher at Woodrow Wilson High School in Dallas, was
on the membership committee of the meeting.
R. T. Westmoreland, Jr., president of the Lamson Oil Cor-
poration, 355 Allens Avenue, Providence 5, Rhode Island, has
for about two years been engaged in securing a complete file of
the Quarterly. He writes that his file is now complete, all in the
original, and "it is one of the best items of my collection of
Texana." In the course of his collecting, Westmoreland has ac-
quired about twenty surplus volumes. He writes that he will be
