For a while these sites were thought to have been prehistoric salt-
evaporation pans. Again the possibility of their being used as a sys-
tem of irrigation was considered-also that of fish traps. .
In his diary, Cabeza de Vaca, who was shipwrecked on Galves-
ton Island about 1522, mentions making trips to the mainland and
finding a system of irrigation whereby the Indians raised a type of
bulb for food. Inasmuch as this bulb still grows here, Cabeza de Vaca
must have been at the mouth of Cedar Bayou, and these sites were
then occupied by the Atakapa Indians....
The Centennial Story of the First Baptist Church, Gatesville,
Texas, a 15o-page book of pictures depicting the establishment
and growth of the church, has been published as the initial step
in a celebration which will be culminated in 1956, the one-
hundredth anniversary of the founding of the church. Besides
being a contribution to the religious history of Central Texas,
the book includes political and economic history of Gatesville
and Coryell County. The Centennial Story, which contains 348
pictures of individuals and groups, was prepared by the church's
centennial committee, composed of Mr. and Mrs. Dan Graves,
Dr. and Mrs. C. A. Morton, Mrs. J. O. Brown, Mrs. Edgar
Franks, T. W. Brumbalow, John P. Reesing, and E. Price
Bauman.
The Summerfield G. Roberts Award of $1,ooo, created in the
spring of '1951, will be made through the Sons of the Republic
of 'Texas and in cooperation with the Texas Institute of Letters
for the work dealing with Texas before 1846 which best "per-
petuates the memory and the spirit of the men and women who
achieved and maintained the independence of Texas."
PURPOSE OF AWARD. The donor and sponsors hope in this way
to contribute toward a current understanding of the genesis of
Anglo-American civilization in this region and an accurate ap-
praisal of the character and characteristics of the pioneers.
CONTINUITY OF THE AWARD. The Sons of the Republic of
Texas hope to offer this or similar awards annually. Books pub-
lished during the calendar year ending October 1 and manu-
scripts ready for publication will be eligible.
WHO MAY ENTER. Books may be entered by the author, by
the publisher, by other individuals, or by historical organizations.561
