asm. In the process, G. A. Fitch of the Texas delegation gained the
attention of the chair and said, "I am authorized by the delegation
from Texas to have her vote recorded for Abraham Lincoln."24
Texas, like the other Seward states, switched its vote to Lincoln
in order to make the nomination unanimous.
After the nomination of Lincoln and a short adjournment, the
convention turned to the vice-presidential nomination. On the
first ballot Texas cast its entire six votes for Sam Houston, even
though his name had apparently not been formally placed before
the convention. These were the only votes cast for Houston. On
the second and third ballots, Texas voted for Cassius M. Clay, of
Kentucky, but Hannibal Hamlin, of Maine, received the nomi-
nation,* which was later made unanimous. On a roll call of the
states for nominations of one member from each state to serve
on the national committee, Dunbar Henderson was chosen as the
member from Texas, after which the convention adjourned sine
die.2"
Henderson, the Texas national committeman, did not attend
the next national convention at Baltimore in 1864. In fact, no
Texas delegates were present at the 1864 meeting. When legiti-
mate Texas delegations did begin attending the Republican na-
tional conventions after the Civil War, none of the 186o dele-
gation ever represented Texas again.27
