period. Thus the opening section by Rupert B. Vance concerns
"The Twentieth-Century South as Viewed by English-speaking
Travelers, 1900-1955." Vance includes accounts pertaining to
Texas by college students and professors, newspaper reporters,
travel agents, domestic and foreign travelers, and one rambling
Texas laborer. A second part by Lawrence S. Thompson, "For-
eign-Language Accounts by Travelers in the Southern States,
1900-1955," adds an even larger number of items to the list of
those mentioning Texas. Of special interest to foreign observers
were the landscape, the oil industry, agriculture, racial groups,
cultural and economic progress, and social life in Texas.
Although the index is quite full it should be noted that to
locate all entries for a single state, such as Texas, one must be
prepared to search them out under specific place names.
