Contributed by MERLE MEARS DUNCAN
ICHARD COKE, LAWYER AND FORMER WACO REPRESENTATIVE
I to the Texas Secession Convention, served as Governor of
i Texas from 1874 until he resigned following his election
to the United States Senate in 1876. Coke represented Texas in
the Congress of the United States for eighteen years, until he re-
tired because of poor health in 1894. This letter from Coke to
his friend and family physician Dr. David R. Wallace is one of
the most complete statements of his political views in existence,
especially at the time of the gubernatorial campaign of 189o.
The original letter is in the possession of Belle Tyler Hubbard, a
granddaughter of Dr. Wallace.
United States Senate,
Washington, D.C.
August 24, 189o.
Dr. D. R. Wallace,
Terrell, Texas.
Dear Doctor:
Yours with reference to the place on my wife's face, which she'
wrote me you had told her was cancerous, has been received.
It relieves me of a great deal of apprehension. I was almost in the
act of writing to you when your letter came; and I have enclosed
your letter to her and told her to follow your prescription. I have
for a long time had serious apprehensions about that place on her
face, and am still apprehensive, but your letter gives me a great
deal of satisfaction.
You ask me what I think about the condition of Texas politics.
In reply; this is a hard question. I have for a long time looked for
something to turn up in Texas which will create a greater divi-
sion between political parties than exists there now and has here-
'Mary Horne Coke.
