Thursday 9th Novr 1854 Cardenas got up on the 7th with 3 steers
and a horse, 2 steers got in the bog at San Filipi and died-Monte
poned [pawned] my horse for $xo-and did not come on-also my
gun Mike went back and redeamed the horse, saddle and bridle
did not get the gun-could not fine Monte. Will loos nothing, as his
wagon will cover all-Callahan and Lewis got back today Think it
best to remain where we are, unless John and Igg finds a better place-
Friday loth Novr 1854 Grason and Oliver left on the 8th with their
cattle for San Louis Rey valley we are lying on our ores until John
returns-We look for him today-
John and Igg returned in a few days-they think we cannot better
it by leaving this place. We fixed up the old pen at this place and
branded the cattle-814 head. We were not occupied two days in
branding the entire amount. I doubt if so many cattle were ever
branded before in so short a time.
On the 18th inst Callahan, Maney, Shelley Roberts, Mike, myself
and others left camp for Los Angeles-took the light wagon and
ambulance that Mike and Shelley might take some provisions back. I
was going to San Francisco. Callahan and Maney were going home
and the other boyes to look out for employment. We reached Los A-
distance 113 miles-the 5th day-Nothing worthy of note took place-
Remained in camp at los A two days, then C. M. R. F. and myself
took the steamer at San Padro for the city-Left Mike and Shelley
to return to Warner ranch with the wagons.412
