wounded in one leg by gunfire and the other by bayonet. Managing to
make cover, he was helped from hiding place to hiding place by three
fellow survivors as his wounds worsened. After thirteen days, at his urg-
ing, his companions left him. Six harrowing days later he reached the
coast only to be recaptured and taken to Victoria. There, a week later,
he was befriended by the erstwhile "Angel of Goliad," Francisca Alvarez,
who provided him with a fleet horse which carried him to final safety.
This is a popular version of the story although principal sources are
appended. The background material with flashbacks sometimes confuses
rather than advances the story. The author, a great-great-nephew, redeems
the volume by recording the dramatic episode itself without pretension or
elaboration.
