century. Thus Churches in Cultural Captivity is only a worthy com-
panion to, and in no way a replacement for, Rufus Spain's exceptional
and much more detailed work on the same topic for the late nineteenth
century, At Ease in Zion.

This substantial volume comprises the official proceedings of the
third international conference of Mexicanists held in Oaxtepec in No-
vember, 1969. The meeting was a memorable one, not only for the
large number of distinguished international scholars and the high
quality of their papers, but also for the camaraderie that pervaded the
exquisite setting.
Dedicated entirely to Mexican historiography, the conference had
fourteen sessions, each of which constitutes a chapter of this book. In-
cluded are the main papers, as well as the commentaries. The chapters
treat Prehispanic Historiography; Historiography of the Sixteenth and
Seventeenth Centuries; Historiography of the Eighteenth Century and
the Revolutions for Independence; Syntheses of Mexican History; Re-
gional and Local History; Biographical History; Historiography of
Mexican Economic Life; Historiography of Mexican Social Life; His-
toriography of Mexican Political Life; Common Problems of Research
in Mexico and the United States; Historiography of International Re-
lations; New Methods and Research Techniques; Problems in the His-
tory of Ideas; and The Social Content of Literature and the Arts.
Some of the papers are in Spanish, others are in English, which per-
haps accounts for the numerous typographical errors. As in all
collections of this kind, there is inevitably a certain unevenness and
even disjointedness. Nevertheless, the overall quality of the analyses is
high, the topics are imaginatively conceived, and the end result is an
extremely valuable bibliographical reference.
