take a realistic look at the often unpleasant realities of the Texas past. One
cannot deny that there is something unique about the place. Mark E. Nack-
man deserves our thanks for isolating some of the factors that bred those
peculiarities. He has written a good book, and is no doubt aware that the
Texas frontier experience was in many respects similar to that of other
states.

Six Score: The 20o Best Books on the Range Cattle Industry. By William
S. Reese. (Austin: Jenkins Publishing Company, 1976. Pp. 85. Il-
lustrations, index. $17.50.)
Book people will move quickly to acquire both of these selective biblio-
graphies. Thoughtfully constructed and richly annotated, they mark an
auspicious beginning for a stimulating new series that originated in the
fecund mind of Johnny Jenkins, Texas bookman and publisher.
Admittedly gunman literature is collectible more for rarity than relia-
bility. In his introduction, however, the late Ramon F. Adams cites four-
teen authoritative titles that would form a solid foundation for such a
library. Adams, who died two years ago at the age of eighty-six, exempli-
fied Wilmarth Lewis's observation that "ardent collectors are among the
happiest of men because age does not weaken their rapacity." In this in-
stance the annotations are replete with the author's personal collecting
adventures.
Those who disagree with the titles in either of these bibliographies are
free to make and defend their own lists. This reviewer would merely add
other editions of certain titles. Adam's inclusion of Horace Bell's Reminis-
cences of a Ranger is perfectly valid. The edition that will be coveted by
every lover of finely printed books is that issued in three parts from the
Ward Ritchie Press in 1965-1967. It should also be clarified that the points
raised in item I31 (Bob Stephen's biography of Walter Durbin) apply
only to eight preliminary copies given to the author, and not to trade copies.
The Reese book is admirably wrought. His bibliographical format is
consistent and well suited to the subject; his comments are always germane;
he gives concise evaluations and usually relates his choices to others in the
field. In brief, Louis P. Merrill's Aristocrats of the Cattle Country, the124
