Fort Duncan M[a]y Ist. 1856
My dear James:
Terrible hurry: mail off in few minutes[;] going fishing for Buffalo
Fish tomorrow. Will you come along. Been to Fort Clark since I wrote
to you, had a fine time[.]
I think I will be able to send you some more potatoes please plant
the seed "balls" of those you have, nip off the ends of the vines if they
grow too luxuriantly.30
Yours ever and truly
Albert J. Myer
30This is the last of the letters to James Walden in the Myer Papers. What became of
the others, if there were any, is not known. Myer's "Diary," Myer Collection, indicates that
he settled into garrison life at Fort Duncan for the remainder of his tour in Texas, carry-
ing on his duties, raising chickens and a garden, reading Macaulay and Gibbon, touring
the countryside, and generally enjoying himself. He recorded while he was packing for his
6o-day leave July 2o, 1857, that he had been up all night at a celebration given him by the
citizens of Eagle Pass. The last words he wrote in his Diary in Texas were, "God has been
kind to me and I trust I thank him."
