Meetings
The Association will hold its eighty-third annual meeting at El Trop-
icano Hotel in San Antonio, March 8-10, 1979.
Clippings
At the annual meeting in March, 1978, President F. Lee Lawrence
announced that the Association will launch a drive to raise $500,000
over the next five years for an endowment fund. The purpose of the
endowment is to insure that the Association will be able to continue
its many activities. The most noted work of the Association is, of course,
the publication of the Southwestern Historical Quarterly. Members
know that their annual dues make its publication possible. But the As-
sociation also publishes the Handbook of Texas and other books on
Texas. It sponsors the Junior Historians, a state-wide program through
which thousands of junior and senior high school students become ac-
tively involved in the study of the Texas past. A few years ago the Asso-
ciation established the Webb Historical Society, an organization to
promote interest in and research of Texas history among college and
university students. With the Department of History at the University
of Texas, Austin, your Association cosponsors each summer the Insti-
tute of Texas Studies, a graduate level program on Texas history for
history teachers.
In cooperation with the Dallas Historical Society, the Institute of
Texan Cultures, and the Houston Metropolitan Archives, the Associa-
tion holds summer workshops and other programs to enable teachers to
upgrade the level of instruction about Texas history in the state's
schools.
There is not one of these activities that any of us would want to drop
and we have no plans to discontinue any of them. At the same time,
however, the Association must be assured of means to support these
various programs. Hence the drive for an endowment.
J. P. Bryan, Jr., is chairman of the fund drive and he is assisted by
executive council member Robert A. Nesbitt. With 3,000 members
working together, we ought to be able to reach our five-year goal of
$500,000.
