Galveston County Historical Museum, 2219 Market Street, Galveston,
recently completed a new exhibit system and interior design. Three-
fourths of the space in the museum is devoted to Galveston County his-
tory and the rest to a different traveling exhibit every month. The first
quarter of 1979 has seen a dramatic rise of 213 percent in attendance
at the museum over the same period last year.
"We were a little band, contending for liberty," is the title of a recent
exhibit at the Texas State Archives commemorating the 143rd anni-
versity of Texas Independence. A selective group of fine Texana from
the collections of the State Archives and the Texas Memorial Museum
highlighted the exhibit. The documents include the Organic Law passed
by the Consultation in November, 1835, the Turtle Bayou Resolutions,
the Articles of Capitulation signed by General Martin Perfecto de C6s at
the surrender of San Antonio, and Santa Anna's letter to President An-
drew Jackson requesting the president's aid in negotiations between
Mexico and Texas to end the war.
The Southwestern Library Association will continue its award to the
book or books which best contribute(s) to the permanent record pf the
Southwest, and which provide(s) a true interpretation of the region's
heritage. The award(s) will be presented at the biennial conference in
San Antonio, on October 3o, 1980. Members of the Awards Committee
currently are studying titles already nominated for the award, and would
like to receive additional suggestions from SWLA members.
In making, nomination, members and publishers are asked to keep
in mind the following guidelines:
1. Books nominated must have a publication date falling within the
two calendar years preceding the SWLA meeting at which the
award is to be made-1978 or 1979. The deadline for titles pub-
lished in 1978 is June 30o, 1979; for those published in 1979, it will
be April 3o, 1980.
2. Nominated titles may deal with the Southwest as a unit or they
may deal with any state or states of the Southwest sq long as they
also contribute to the permanent record of the region, and provide
a true interpretation of the southwestern heritage.
3. Authors need not be natives or residents of any of the states rep-
resented by SWLA.
4. An edition or translation may be considered if the book is of value
to the permanent record of the region.61
