Calvert's dependence on cotton. Nearly all the buildings were con-
structed during the thirty-year period of town development; the last
major building was constructed in 1918. Nothing preceded these struc-
tures and nothing has followed. No gradual change in urban pattern
has ever occurred. No modification through urban renewal has taken
place in the town, because there has been no economic resurgence.
Calvert appears today to be suspended in time-a living example of a
bygone era in urban development.
