476 Southwestern Historical Quarterly
The Border Economy: Regional Development in the Southwest is
a valuable contribution to scholarship. Hansen clearly understands
the social and political, as well as the economic, factors affecting the
border states. Treading a middle ground, avoiding both the Marxist
and neoclassical models, he fashions a provocative work. Although he
has written mostly economic analysis, including some technical or
statistical jargon, he has also offered some historical narrative. And
where he tells the history of the Southwest, he is straightforward, clear,
and accurate. And even for those who disagree with his conclusions,
he has, in a sympathetic and readable manner, provided an enormous
amount of recent economic, demographic, and political data for the
southwestern states.
