Edward Hake Phillips is professor of history emeritus at Austin Col-
lege in Sherman, where he taught from 1959 until his retirement in
1983. His tenure was marked by a deep interest in his students' applica-
tion of historical principle to their own situations, and his courses in
local history provided a laboratory for them to hone their skills. Ed
wrote "A Walk Through the Campus" for Footsteps to the Past: A Walking
Tour History of the Austin College Campus, which he edited with Light T.
Cummins in 1988. The book consisted of essays on the history of each
building and memorial on the campus. This long-running interest in
the college's history has now led to Ed's publication of A Short History of
Austin College, which is a chronological account of the school's develop-
ment from its founding in 1849 until today. The softbound book is il-
lustrated with portraits of several of the school's presidents and con-
tains a note on sources, endnotes, and an index. It is available from the
Austin College Campus Store, Box 6C, Austin College, Sherman, 75091.
The price is $7.50, which includes tax and shipping.
