This year is the 2ooth anniversary of the birth of Sam Houston, a major
figure in nineteenth-century Texas and the United States. Houston the
military figure, Houston the politician, and Houston the man have
been the subject of speculation, analysis, public scrutiny, and scholarly
study for generations. A complex and sometimes enigmatic figure,
Houston was at the center of controversy during much of his life, and
he continues to be a man of great interest two centuries after his birth.
One part of his life-his political relationship with the Know-Nothing
Party in the 1850s-is the subject of an article in this issue.
