Opposite page: This photograph of Allen Jones (left) and George Glenn was tak-
en at the annual celebration of the Trail Drivers Association in San Antonio in
October 1924. Glenn (ca. 1851-1932) may have been one of the inspirations
for the character of Deets in Larry McMurtry's novel Lonesome Dove. Hundreds of
scholarly theses and dissertations have been researched and written about the
lives and experiences of black Texans. A bibliography of these important but of-
