By 1885, as this Sanborn fire insurance map of Fort Worth shows, Twelfth and
Rusk was well established as the geographic center of Hell's Half Acre, with a
succession of "boarding houses," cribs, saloons, and dance halls stretching in
every direction. Few women other than prostitutes would be seen in this area-
