Affairs of the Association
ties, including the annual meeting, the Southwestern Historical Quarterly,
and our educational programs). Considering that the interest income
on our endowment remains at about six percent and that we suffered
capital losses of approximately $78,000 last year, we are fortunate to
have remained in the black. Our finance committee has discussed this
matter with the trust officers at Texas Commerce Bank, the custodian of
our funds. Last year was apparently a bad year across the board for in-
vestments and we hope that we will not suffer any further capital losses.
We will, of course, continue to monitor this situation.
The General Fund finished the year $676.27 in the black, for a bal-
ance of $173,926.08. The Executive Council voted at its fall 1994 meet-
ing to increase our annual dues from $25 to $35 to help ease this
situation.
Last year was a good year for the Publication Fund. We enjoyed
$56,397.69 in grants and had total sales of $199,743.29, which gave the
fund a surplus of $47,439.51 and a final balance of $687,203.55.
The Handbook Fund also finished the year in better shape than we had
anticipated. We received total contributions of $318,635.03 and had ex-
penses of $308,010.94, which allowed us to finish the year with a bal-
ance of $133,473.29 in the fund.
Ann Russell, our bookkeeper for a number of years, has applied for
disability. She has not been able to work for more than a month, and we
have employed a new bookkeeper, Amy Graham.
THE New Handbook of Texas
We have made substantial progress toward completing the New Hand-
book of Texas. From September through January, we received a number
of entries, continued the final editing of manuscripts, began production
work, and launched our pre-publication marketing campaign. Produc-
tion status of the project is summarized in the following table.

Doug Barnett, managing editor, reports good results in efforts to fin-
ish preparation of the text and illustrations. A number of significant en-
