From Comanche braves to the Texas Rangers, and from Hood's Brigade
to Audie Murphy, the Texas military tradition is long and frequently dis-
tinguished. In the public mind, warriors in uniform-Indian, Spanish,
Mexican, Anglo-American, and others-often dominate the image of
Texas. This issue of the Southwestern Historical Quarterly focuses on vari-
ous aspects of the military experience in Texas.
The painting on the cover shows a scene from the Mexican War, one of
the most important military events in the history of Texas and the na-
tion, and the subject of an article beginning on page 467 examining ju-
nior officers' attitudes toward that significant conflict. Pictured in the
painting are future U.S. President Zachary Taylor (third from left) and
two junior officers: William Wallace Smith Bliss (fourth from left) and
Braxton Bragg (standing, sixth from left).
