THE WAR BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES
AND MEXICO, ILLUSTRATED
By George Wilkins Kendall
With a new introduction by Ron Tyler
The War Between the United States and Mexico, originally pub-
lished in 1851, was among the most beautiful and signifi-
cant nineteenth-century publications relating to the early
history of Texas. George Wilkins Kendall was the editor of
the New Orleans Picayune and the first American war cor-
respondent. The book contains a brief history of the war
and twelve hand-colored lithographs based on paintings
by Carl Nebel. This handsome full-color facsimile repro-
duces this rare and valuable volume, enhanced with a
scholarly introduction by Ron Tyler.
When the war with Mexico broke out in 1846, Kendall
rushed to Texas and
accompanied the U.S.
Army as it marched into
Mexico. Dissatisfied with
what was written after the
war, Kendall began to
write a history himself. He
contracted with Carl
Nebel, a talented German
artist he had met in Mexico, to paint pictures of the major
battles to illustrate the text.
