This image of a farm scene in Fayette County, Texas by a little-known
artist depicts the landscape and lifestyle of a farm family in the mid-nine-
teenth century. This area of Central Texas, marked by many German
setlements, is near the Washington County farms discussed in Mark
Friedberger's article, "'Mink and Manure': Rural Gentrification and Cat-
tle Raising in Southeast Texas, 1945-1992," beginning on page 269 of
this issue. The article focuses on the twentieth-century phenomenon of
wealthy Texans returning to their mythic, rural roots by buying and
sometimes operating farms and ranches across the state. This movement
has been particularly active in Washington County because of its beauti-
ful geography, history, and proximity to Houston.
