Three Forks Press is pleased to announce publication of a new and re-
vised edition of Darwin Payne's history of Dallas, Big D. The first edition
was published in 1994 and quickly gained recognition as probably the
finest overall account of the city yet published. The 2ooo edition con-
tains new material throughout, including additional information on avi-
ation, the founding of Southern Methodist University, minority
attorneys in Dallas, the first "sit-in" demonstration in 1948 to desegre-
gate a downtown lunch counter, and the involvement of the Dallas
Morning News in a crusade against the Ku Klux Klan in the 192os. A new
final chapter, "Big D Enters the 21st Century," outlines the city's
progress and problems since the mid-gg99os and up to the year 2000.
The new edition includes thirty-two pages of photographs, end notes,
and a bibliography, and is subtitled, Triumphs and Troubles of an American
Supercity in the oth Century. A lifelong resident of Dallas, Darwin Payne is
also a former reporter for the Fort Worth Press and Dallas Times Herald,
the author of seven books, and was a professor of journalism at SMU for
thirty years before retiring in 1997. Big D is a significant contribution to
local history and an excellent addition to any reference library. It is
