Ilamado del Alamo tomada desde azotea de la casa de Beramendi en la
ciudad de Bexar porJos6 Juan Sinchez Estrada," by Jean-Louis Berlandi-
er, c. 1840-1851. Pencil on paper, 24 x 69 inches (image). Courtesy West-
ern Americana Collection, Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Yale
University.
This pencil sketch of the Alamo which is found in a manuscript sketch-
book compiled by Berlandier was based on Jos6 Juan Sinchez's 1840 re-
drawing of his original 1836 sketch. Sinchez's 1840 redrawing, which
appeared on his "Aguayo" map, was the basis for the Berlandier sketch
which was drawn sometime between the publication of the map in 1840
and Berlandier's death in 1851. This significant historical image, and
the confusion surrounding the image and its original creator, is dis-
cussed in detail in Jack Jackson and James E. Ivey's article beginning on
page 207 of this issue.
