been awarded to thirty-three public libraries statewide, all first-time recip-
ients of a book festival grant. The 2002 Texas Book Festival raised
$81,556.32 in grant monies through book sales, special events, sponsor-
ships and exhibitors. Since 1995, the festival has raised $1.43 million for
474 libraries statewide.
The eighth annual Texas Book Festival will take place November 8-9.
Founded by First Lady Laura Bush in 1995, the Festival is held on the
grounds of the Texas State Capitol and features readings and discussions
from renowned authors. The 2oo2 festival attracted more than 30,000 at-
tendees with a program that featured a number of historians, including
Robert Caro, biographer of President Lyndon B. Johnson.
The Walter Prescott Webb Society, the college affiliate of the TSHA,
once again recognizes excellence in historical research and writing with
the annual C. M. Caldwell Memorial Awards. Entries for the competition
can be research papers or projects; the deadline for entries is January 14,
2004.
Research papers on Texas or local history should be 15-30 pages in
length and properly documented. Documentation should be in accor-
dance with the style guide adopted by the TSHA for the Southwestern
Historical Quarterly, online at http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/publications/ style-
guide.html. Previously published papers are not eligible.
Research projects can take a number of forms. Teaching units for pri-
mary or secondary schools may be developed. Documentary media pro-
ductions should be submitted in video format. Oral history projects, col-
lecting programs (photographs, artifacts, documents, business records,
or personal correspondence), and historical restoration and preservation
projects should be submitted as project reports which outline (a) the
scope of the undertaking (b) its purpose (c) procedures followed (d)
findings (e) conclusions (f) significance of the project.
Each paper or project should indicate the student's division: Lower Di-
vision, freshman or sophomore students with no more than 59 semester
hours on September 1 of the current academic year; Upper Division,jun-
iors and seniors with 6o or more semester hours on September 1; and
Graduate Students.
Four prizes are awarded in both the Lower Division and the Upper Di-
vision: first place, $1oo.oo; second place, $75.00; third place, $50.oo;623
