For several years now, the Center for American History at the Universi-
ty of Texas at Austin has been collecting materials relating to the history
of journalism in this country. The collections, housed in the News Media
History Archive, have reached critical mass in the past few months and
now represent perhaps the largest such collection in the country. The
archive now contains the news clipping and research morgues of the New
York Times, the New York Herald-Tribune and the New York Journal-American,
as well as one of the largest collections of historic Texas and Southern
newspapers in the United States. It also contains the archives of impor-
tant media professionals, including such outstanding figures as CBS news
anchor Walter Cronkite, newsman Robert Trout, Sig Mickelson, Joseph
and Shirley Wershba, and Andy Rooney. It also includes the archives of sev-
eral significant photojournalists, including David Hume Kennerly, Dirck
Halstead, Bruce Roberts, Shel Hershorn, Diana Walker, Flip Schulke, and
Margaret Thomas.
In March, Center director Don Carleton announced the gift, from
Newsweek, Inc., of the entire Newsweek magazine research archive for
the years 1933 to 1996. Filling approximately 3,250 archival boxes, the
Newsweek archive is a rich collection of news-related materials collected
by the magazine's reporters and staff over a sixty-three-year span. These625
