Southwestern Historical Quarterly

The Texas Institute of Letters held its sixty-seventh annual meeting on
Saturday, March 29, at the Galvez Hotel in Galveston. Among the many
books honored this year by the institute are two fiction books: Rick Bass's
Hermit's Story (Houghton Mifflin), which received the Jesse H. Jones
Award for Fiction, and Lisa Schamess's Borrowed Light (SMU Press), which
received the Steven Turner Award for Best First Work of Fiction. The Carr
P. Collins Award for Best Book of Nonfiction was given to Ray Gonzalez
for The Underground Heart: A Return to a Hidden Landscape (University of
Arizona Press), and the Friends of the Dallas Public Library Award for the
Book Making the Most Significant Contribution to Knowledge went to
Michael Gagarin for Antiphon the Athenium: Oratory, Law, and Justice in the
Age of Sophists (University of Texas Press). For poetry, the Best Book of Po-
etry Award went to Reginald Gibbons for It's Time (LSU Press), and the
Natalie Ornish Poetry Award was given to Dan Rifenburgh for Advent
(Waywiser Press).
The O. Henry Award for Best Work of Magazine Journalism went to
Lawrence Wright for "The Man Behind Bin Laden" (New Yorker), and the
Stanley Walker Award for the Best Work of Journalism Appearing in a
Newspaper was given to Mark Lisheron and Bill Bishop's "Cities of Ideas"
(Austin-American Statesman). Kinkey Friedman's Meanwhile Back at the
Ranch (Simon & Schuster) won the John Bloom Humor Award (Joe Bob
Briggs Prize for Goldang Funniest Texas Book). The Fred Whitehead
Award for the Best Design of a Trade Book went to Pedro Paramo (Univer-
sity of Texas Press) byJuan Rulfo, with photographs by Josephine Sacabo,
and book and jacket design by D.J. Stout andJulie Savasky of Pentagram.
