12 hands sweeping cotton until 12 o'clock, in the afternoon hoeing,
Lewis & Lev sharpening ploughs, Richmond ditching, Duncan 8
Isaac cutting oats, Harriett nursing Mrs. Webster's babe, Synthia &
Patsey working potatoes, Emaline cooking for overseer. Very slight
indications of rain, getting dry fast enough.
Thursday g
11 hands sweeping cotton in new ground, 14 hands hoeing, 2 work-
ing in potato patch, 4 boys cutting oats, Rich ditching, Lev at differ-
ent jobs about quarter, Harriett nursing Mrs. Webster's babe, Ema-
line cooking for overseer. Had a light shower of rain in the forenoon,
set out a few potato slips though expect them to die if we have no
more rain, though present appearance indicates rain.
Friday to
1 hands sweeping cotton in new ground, 9 hoeing cotton, to thrash-
ing wheat, 4 cutting oats, Harriett at the house nursing Mrs. Web-
ster's babe, Emaline cooking for overseer. Clear 8c very warm.
Monday, August 1
Hands picked cotton until 12 o'c, I suppose about 1250 lbs. We had
a fine season today.
Tuesday 2
21 hands picking cotton, they picked 2,000 lbs., Lev & Lewis fencing
in quarter, Rich ditching, Emaline at the house, Patsey cooking at
the house, Clabe minding mules in rye field, Synthia will go out to-
morrow, Sarah cooking for overseer, Henry Clay grinding, Willis 8c
Ryal driving, Isaac making baskets, Sam driving carriage, Joe Allen
at the house. Had a light shower of rain.
Wednesday 3
24 hands picked 3,000 lbs of cotton, Lewis & Lev working on quarter
yard, Richmond ditching, Duncan sowing turnips and preparing the
ground, Patsey cooking at the house, Emaline peeling peaches, Sarah
