Spirit Of ACC
Years of sacrifice and heart-breaking labor have made Abilene
Christian college. This school was not "produced" was not pre-
fabricated but grew through the tireless efforts of Christian men
and women. Like the nation of which it is a part ACC was planted
and cultivated by God-fearing far-sighted folk.
In the current campaign to lift the college completely from debt
large donations have been made and for them it is deeply grateful
but letters like that printed below touch a more profound chord
and arouse an intense pride that can be only designated the Spirit
of ACC.
Abilene Christian College
Abilene Texas
Dear Sirs
I have received bulletins from the college in the last
few weeks stating results of the drive launched for improve-
ment of ACC. I have been gratified at the results. I have
noted group donations from the various organizations
such as ex-students present students and single congre-
gations. However I have failed to see where there was united
effort from a group of "desiring to be be future students."
I have been deeply impressed by ACC since I have
become a member of the Church and I feel that any move
to the furtherance and edification of ACC will have untold
effects on the spreading of the Kingdom of the Lord.
In about two years I plan to enter Abilene Christian
College the Lord willing. But desiring to be of some benefit
to the institution before I have the privilege of entering
I am behooved to send this small sum in hope that it may be
used in a work for the Lord.
It is my desire that this small gift be kept in privacy
due to the fact that my family lives in Abilene and might
disapprove of my action.
Wishing and praying for God's blessing on the work
being done by the College I remain
Yours in Christ

Dear Editor:
I am not fully against a gossip
column but do not agree with
some of the features that have
made up the said column. Most
of us have weakness for prying
into what is not our business. Wo
can really digest a column with
plenty of dirt in it until we get
down about four lines where our
name is mentioned. Then fur
starts flying.
To pry into a couple's private
affairs and spread it open for
public eyes to exaggerate seems
to be a grave mistake. By the
time anyone reaches college
such matters take a more serious
atmosphere and in many cases
a sacred relationship. To lay this
open to querulous eyes to scoff
and ridicule should be preceded
by serious thought.
Here in keeping with moral
standards of the school compan

Last week I presented some questions on hard and soft preach-
ing asking for answers. This week we give the Arena space to a
reply to the column by Ralph Graham. Bro. Graham's article follows:
As all so-called and self-styled
"hard" preachers appeal to Christ
and the apostles as perfect examples
of hard preaching we shall consider
the circumstances which invoked
Christ and the apostles to use strong
language of condemnation upon va-
rious occasions.
1. Jesus Mt. 0:5 calls some hypo-
crites but tells why in the same
verse.
2. Jesus Mt 12:34 calls some off-
spring of vipers because they were
evil.
3. Jesus Mt 15:1-11 calls the
worship of some vain and tells why.
4. Jesus Mt 16:23 calls Peter
Satan but tells why in the same
verse.
t
ionship of boys and girls is plac-
ed on a higher than the average
standard and only two couples
out of the thousands that have
met on this campus have ended
in divorce courts. To have gossip-
mongers hold a couple up to the
public eye in print is to endanger
the continuance of a sacred re-
lation. Such columns are usually ex-
pected and found in high school
papers but in very few good
college papers. These stories
are not news and easily become
repulsive to the re'st of the stu-
dent body.
Of course there are exceptions
to most rules. I feel that almost
100 per cent of the student body
read and probably enjoyed one
edition of our own "5th Column."
"Ho-hum."

5. Jesus strongly rebukes the
Pharisees and scribes and tells why
in Mt. 23:13-32.
0. Stephen Acts 7:51 accused the
Jews of having filthy hearts and
dirty ears; the reason is in the same
verse.
7. Paul Acts 13:10 calles Elymas
a son of the devil and gives the
reason in the same verse.
I am not desirous of being called
"hard" or "soft" as this would simply
be some person's opinion; but if I
follow the above examples in similar
circumstances I count myself de-
pendent upon the attitude of the
hearers.
A New Testament preacher is cer-
tainly not a fanatic a show-off or
a compromiser.

DLC Bests Freed-Hardeman
To Take MVC Championship
By virtue of their straight march
through the net crews of Freed-
Hardeman Northwest of Mississippi
and U.T.'s Jr. Vols at a conference
tournament in Jackson two weeks
ago David Lipscomb's Bisons (Nash-
ville) were basketball champs of
the Mississippi Valley conference.
According to the Lipscomb Bab-
bler Freed-Hardeman fell behind
the first quarter in the Christian
college contest and was unable to
overtake the galloping Bisons as
they led 10-7 22-19 41-33 and 53-47.

Punishment For Children?
Yes Indeed Say Students
"Do you believe in corporal pun-
ishment for children?" was the
question put to Campus Canvass vic-
tims this week. To put it in simple
language and the students usually
wanted it that way "Do you believe
in using a hair brush on an unruly
brat?"
An overwhelming majority of stu-
dents believed in the time-worn but
effective adage: "Sparc the rod and
spoil the child."
"I'm for it" stated Effie McCord
emphatically. "I was raised with a
hair brush figuratively and liter-
ally and look at me now."
"Very necessary" said Dale King.
"My boy's going to jet it"
"It all depends on the kid" opined
Coffee Jokes Doors Floods
ImpressedTraveling Debaters
By Jimmy McKinnoy
Stale jokes undrinkable coffee
locked doors and flooded Arkansas.
This queer list is composed of items
and incidents that made an impres-
sion on the two ACC debate teams
that last week complete a tour of
Arkansas Tennessee and Louisana.
The two teams Jimmy Wood and
J. W. Roberts and Earnest Finley
and Ira North returned to the col-
lege early Sunday morning tired
happy and bubbling over with things
they had seen and heard.
The Wildcats confessed foisting
the stale tale upon unsuspecting
judges and opponents from Hender-
son Tennessee to Natchitoches
Louisiana. The joke (?) explained
the boys was used to illustrate a
point in their argument:

Under the head "Lectures vs. Stu-
dent Participation" the editorial col-
umn of George Pepperdinc's Graphic
(Los Angeles) this week called for
more student participation in chapel
programs.
Said the Graphic "Students get an

rut for most of the chapel experien-
ces have been lectures. Getting bored
with so many speeches In addition to
class lessons they seek a relief else-
where." Orvllle MacDonald. "For instance it
was useless In my case."
Roy James was more blood-thirsty
than most saying candidly "I'm
goint to beat the' stuffing out of my
children."
G. Lowe was somewhat "on the
fence" as was apparent in the state-
ment "Get around whopping them
if you can; but if you can't do a
go-o-o-o-d job."
Opposing corporal punishment was
a small but determined duct of stu-
dents. Allcnc Howard headed the
list: "I'm against it even though
some of my college students make
me feel like spanking them."
"I think chloroform is much more
effective and quieter" said Mary
Ellen Key.
A specd-minded moronic motor-
ist was told by the judge to choose
between thirty days or $30. Said
he "I'll take the $30."

Wo'vo seen fow look so lonely as
did Evelyn Crenshaw last Sunday
when Wallace failed to show up for
the A Cappclla trip to Hamlin
Nourishing a faint hope that he
would turn up anyway in time for
the program Evelyn's spirits made
fitful efforts to stay high until time
for program and still no Wallace.
She remarked once that she could
hear someone calling his name every
once in a while. Ah poor girl sad

You've also probably seen "Buddy"

We're not going to tell any scandal
on Lcoda though; cause she loaned
us a badly needed quarter the other
day.
Our erstwhile better half A. C.
Greene now In Phillips U. sent
us this bit of worse verse which Is
too good to keep:
"My longing for her now returns!
I feel tho flame of old desires
And still in me the wonder
grows
Where did she get those four new
tires?"
