Student participation declines in compatability test
Paul Anthony
Student Reporter
Despite a lack of publicity
the ACM Compatibility Test
continues this year to raise
money for the student chapter
of the Association for
Computing Machinery
. ACM's sixth annual online
compatibility test closed Sunday
at midnight and the results
were available in the Campus
Center for $1 through
Wednesday
"Its a fun tradition" said Tim
Spain who runs public relations
for ACM.
The results give participating
students the 10 people with
whom they were the most com-
patible along with the fic peo-
ple with whom they were the
least compatible
The test also allowed a par-
ticipant to see how compatible
he or she was with another par
ticipating student
The questionnaire which
was found at ACMs Web site
acm acu cdu contained 43 ques-
tions about everything from a
students study habits to what
term he or she uses when refer-
ring to a carbonated bccragc
"A majority or the questions
arc based on the Mcycrs-Briggs
personality test" Spain senior
youth and family ministry major
from Martin Tcnn said
The makers of the ACM test
thought up questions and made
up possible answers that would
correlate to choices on the
Mcers-Dnggs test
Once all the questionnaires
were filled out a computer ana-
lyzed the results and picked out
the two lists
The test had become more
popular each year he said and
last year the group raised $700
But Spain said he was worried
about turnout this year because

of the new Chapel policy of hav-
ing no announcements
He said without the capabili-
ty to have a public announce-
ment the number of partici-
pants especially among incom-
ing freshmen who had never
heard of the test may have
declined
Indeed numbers were down
significantly said Ty Purcell
junior electronic media major
from Roscoc
Purcell is also the secretary
for ACM and the chair of ACMls
wireless networking committee
"The numbers arc maybe a
third less" he said "and we
think its because of the lack of
Chapel announcements "
ACM instead relied on paper
advertisements that its mem-
bers mostly computer science
majors and enthusiasts placed
throughout the dorms
But even with the advertise-
ments Purcell said the group
saw the number of respondents
drop from 1100 last year to just
650 this ear For ACM this
means less income
"Hopefully we can clear
$500" he said
Still many freshmen did take
the lest even though most had
not heard about it before they
saw the ads
Joshua Swarb freshman
management major from
Monahans said he took the test
without having heard of it
before but he was unsure about
how good the results would be
"I don't know If they could
make very accurate matches
based on the questions" he said
Matthew lie freshman Bible
and engineering major from San
Antonio also said he had not
heard of the test before but took
it out of curiosity
"l was curious to see if 1
knew any of the girls that 1 was
compatible with" he said "And
maybe get a date
"1 don't know if its going to
be too accurate but it had some
good questions "
Accurate or not; Preston
Hagar freshman computer sci-
ence major from Fort Worth
said he had no interest in the
test even though he had been
visiting ACU when the test was
SARA KERENS

pated in an online survey that showed their compatability
with other participating students early this week.
in progress last Valentine's Day
"1 really didn't see any need
to take the test" Hagar said
"IVe had a girlfriend for two
years and really don't care to see
who I'm compatible with "
ACM members plan to con-
tinue having the compatibility
test in the future and both
Swarb and Lee said they would
participate next year
Spain said the fee to get the
results would be used to fund
ACM projects
ACM is a computer club that
works independently of Team
55 but still strives to help ACU
students he said
"The test is the biggest fund
raiser we've got" Spain said

"I needed a Valentines gift
and roses are just the traditional
thing" Melton said "I just
thought the whole single rose
idea was cute "
The one drawback Melton
said was the cost Because the
small presents add up quickly
she said that she thought the
prices could hac been a little
lower
"I needed an inexpensive
present considering I had
already bought some presents"
Melton said "1 think the prices
were kind of sleep"
Cody Dishman freshman
undeclared major from Missouri
City on the other hand said he
thought the pnecs were compet-
itive "1 don't really know how
much roses run exactly"
Dishman said "but it wasnt too
bad"
But like Melton Dishman
said the roses were a good way to
express his feelings
"I got them because I wanted
to show somebody that I
thought they were special"
Dishman said
