Citizens Participation Seen
As Key To Democracy
The necessity for a broad po-
litical participation on the part
of the citizenry in a democracy
and to gain a better understand-
ing of our social and political
heritage have been the main
points presented during Democ-racy-In-Action
Week at Howard
Payne.
Climaxing the week there will
be a speech Friday by Roy Ru-
bottom assistant secretary of

Is Announced
Dr. Guy D. Newman piesident
of How aid Payne College an-
nounced Monday the first annual
President's Awaid for the thiee
out-tandmg o-says on Demoeiacy-ln-Action
Week.
Cai.li pi les of $50 $35 and $25
will be awarded for the first
second and thud prizes lespec-
tively. The prizes will be paid
by the Texas Bureau for Eco-
nomic Understanding.
The essays will be judged by I
a fatultv committee composed of
Mis. Lt l.i Spenser chairman; Dr.
Z. T Huff and Dr. Francos Mer-
rctt The committee will grade
the papcis on conciseness in-
terpolation and foim Theio is
no set limit as to length but Dr.
Newman aid conciseness would
be emphasized.
In addition to interpreting the
sessions of the week Dr. New-
man wants each student to give
a summary of his impiession of
the Deniocracy-in-Action Week
criticism and suggestions as to
how the sessions can be im-
proved and student participation
increased.
The papers are due no later
than Tuesday April 29 Dr. New-
man said.

Coronation Slated

Twelve Howard Payne co-eds
will be waiting anxiously Satur-
day May 3 when one of them
will be crowned May Queen
concluding "Parents Weekend."
Each class has elected three
nominees for queen. One of these
young ladies will be crowned
May Queen and the remaining
eleven will compromise the court.
Senior Nominees
Elected to represent the senior
class were Patty Eads Marian
Claborn and Vivian Triplitt.
Patty is from Chillicothe ma-
joring in speech and minoring in
English. She is a member of the
BSU Executive Council the Col-
lege Theatre LSB Homecoming
Queen Nominee senior class sec-
retary and a member of Who's
Who.
Marian is an elementary educa-
tion major from Zephyr. She is
minoring in English. Marion is an
active member of the FTA.
Vivian is a business major from
Edinburg. She is also minoring
in English. She is a member of
the Jacket Co-Eds Alpha Beta
Sigma and is the vice piesident
of the YWA.

State Senator Carlos Ashley of
Llano will speak at the 10 a.m.
chapel meeting Monday at How-
ard Payne College announced Dr.

dent and dean.

Peggy Pate Martha Darlington
and Martha Sawyer.
Peggy is a speech major from
Lancaster. She is the recently-
elected student council secretary
for 1958-'59 a member of Alpha
Chi an the Theatre Club and in-
coming president of the Jackets
Co-Eds.
Martha Darlington is an Eng-
lish major from Dixie Ga. She
is a member of the BSU execu-
tive council a member of LSB
the Jacket Co-Eds and the Col-
lege Theatre.
Martha Sawyer is an elemen-
tary education major from Fort
Worth. She is a transfer from De-
catur Baptist College a member
of the BSU and A Cappella Choir.
Sophomore Nominees
Elected from the sophomore
class were Betty Gore Virginia
Cross and Martha Christmas.
Betty is a business major from
Comanche. She is minoring in
English.
Virginia is a speech major from
Plainview. She is a member of
the Jacket Co-Eds Theatre Club
and the PoGo Club. Virginia was
May Queen of 1957.
Martha is an English major
from Dallas. She is an active
member of the FTA and the Mis-
sion Band.

and Laverno Johnson.

Queen at 8 p.m. in Coggin Chapel.
Tickets will go on sale Mon-
day for the May Queen presenta-
tion and barbecue dinner.
