Some draft registration
questions already answered
Most men and women in the
18-26 age bracket including
Howard Payne students are
probably wondering about the
possibility of registration for
the draft and the draft itself.
Some of those questions were
answered by calling the
Selective Service hotline in
Washington D.C.
Right now President Jimmy
Carter's move to resume
registration of young people is
only the first step toward
revival of military draft which
ended in 1973.
Probably the most important
question is whether women will
be required to register and
signs point to that possibility.
Carter and top administration
officials have indicated that if
the draft and registration were
resumed women should be
included.
Carter's wife Rosalynn said
last week: "If we are going to
register men I think we are
going to have to register
women."
Registration of men 18-26 can
be ordered by Carter but
registration of women would
have to be approved by
Congress. He also has the
authority to order the next step
on the way to a draft
classification and physical
examinations but does not have
the authority to actually draft
anyone. Congress would also
have to approve the draft.
Many questions have yet to be
answered including the female
question. Carter has said that
he will announce his decision
about registering women Feb. 9
when he is due to send a final
report to Congress on the whole
draft-military mobilization
problem.
However these questions have
been answered:
--The present draft age
bracket 18-26 would include a
pool of approximately 16 million

to be at Baylor heb. v-iu
men. There are slightly more
than 16 million women in the
same age bracket.
-That pool is probably larger
than would be needed even in a
major emergency. It is possible
the age bracket could be
narrowed to 18-20 or 19-21.
-Plans call for using the
postal system to handle
registration. Young people
would go to their local post
office and fill out a form listing
name address date of birth
parents' names and where tney
can be reached. That in-
formation would then be stored
in federal computers. Those
who register would not be
issued draft cards as in earlier
drafts.
Defense Department
planning for mobilization in an
emergency is based on the idea
that the army would need its
first draftees within 30 days.
The 1980 Baptist Student
Union (BSU) Leadership
Training Conference (LTC) will
be held February 8-10 on the
Baylor University campus in
Waco according to Dinah
Wooley vice-president of
Howard Payne's BSU.
The weekend will include
general sessions leadership
seminars and a special com-
missioning service.
The general sessions will
feature Logan Cummings
pastor of Parkdale Baptist
Qhurch Corpus Christi; Jesse

Several singing groups from
variousv colleges will also

Seventeen special interest
groups of'iBSU will be the
subject o'h the leadership'
seminars. Participants are to
choose one areX and attend each
seminar it offers. The seminar
groups will meet for lectures
discussion brainstorming and
fellowship.
The 1980 BSU summer
missionaries will be com-
missioned by the group at-
tending the conference
Saturday night. Wooley said the
commissioning service has
proved to be the most
meaningful and impressive
service of the past conferences.
"LTC is for everyone and we
want at least 100 students from
Howard Payne to attend" said
Wooley. "Most people seem to
think that the weekend will cost
too much for their budget there
are ways to get around a high-
cost trip."
Wooley suggests carpooling to
cut down on transportation
costs.
Students not staying with
friends or relatives can stay at
the Ramada Inn. Howard
Payne has reserved ac-
comodations for 40 people for
$8.75 a night. Persons planning
to stay at the Ramada Inn must
have their deposits made to the
Howard Payne BSU office by 3
p.m. Wednesday Feb. 6.
Baylor University Food
Service is offering lunch on
Saturday for $2.25 per person.
Tickets for the meal must be
bought Friday night. Also a
sack lunch will be provided for
Sunday afternoon tickets for
