School of Education gets four-year
By Robyn Roberts
Howard Payne's School
of Education has received
a four-year accreditation
extension after a Texas
Education Agency (TEA)
team analyzed the teacher
education program. There
are however said Dr.
Howard Tucker Dean of
the School of Education
some suggestions to be met.
The first suggested
change is that HPU'i
Board of Trustees file an
"interim status report" by
May 1984 expressing the
"university's commitment
to education." This is a
state requirement that has
HP students to make mission trip to
Nine Howard Payne
students will be traveling
to Belize during the holiday
break. Belize is a country
formerly known as the
British Honduras on the
east coast of Central
America.
The trip is being spon-
sored in conjunction with
Green Acres Baptist
Church in Tyler as a mis

Association of Teachers of

auditions and convention

held the third week of
November at Texas Tech
University in Lubbock.

for many years Tucker
said. The report is to ap-
pear in the 1984-85 Howard
Payne University Bulletin
(catalog).
The second suggestion is
to improve the "written
organized in-service plan
for supervising teachers."
This refers to HPU faculty
nembers who oversee stu-
Jent teachers from the
university as well as the
Brownwood area teachers
who are assigned student
teachers Tucker said.
The third suggestion for
the extension is that there
sions project to aid the city
of Belize and Punta Gorda
an under developed area in
the south part of the
country.
Three of the nine
students (Mark Dance
Kyle Medlock and David
Butts) making the trip will
depart for Punta Gorda on
Dec. 19 from Houston and
the remaining six (Candy
seven students win NATS
competitions
(preliminaries semifinals
and finals) seven made it to
the semifinals.
"The ratio was quite high
in comparison to other
schools entered" said Mrs.
Hibbs.
She said 680 students
representing the states of
Tex. Okla. and N. Mex.
were entered. These
students included ones

professional organization
as a part of the local ad-
visory group for educa-
tional programs Tucker
said. It may be someone
from the Texas State
Teachers's Association the
Association of Teachers
and Professional
Educators or even a
member of the local bar
association Tucker said.
He hopes that there will be
representatives from more
than one organization so
that the advisory group will
not seem to favor one over
another.

groups will remain there

until Jan. 7.

of UT as well as Rice

North Texas State and
even Southwestern Baptist
Theological Seminary.
At the competition Elem

music at HP was named
"Singer of the Year." He
was judged best among 25
entries at the convention
and was awarded a $1000
scholarship to study at the

The fourth suggestion
given by TEA is that the
membership list of the
local Cooperative Educa-
tion Board be updated. This
is something that was
overlooked when the report
was made Tucker said.
Even his own name as
Dean of the School of
Education does not appear
on the list.
The last suggestion listed
is that "steps should be
taken to improve consulta-
tion between administra-
tion and faculty." Tucker
said he's not sure exactly
what is meant by that but
personal witnessing hold
revival services and
possibly do some construc-
tion work explained Paul

Union director.
Those staying in Punta
Gorda will be involved in
the same activities in addi-
tion to medical mission
work in the community.
Sullivan explained that

Musical Studies in Graz

"I'm proud of our show-
ing" Mrs. Hibbs said "it
was a tremendous oppor-
tunity for Howard Payne to
be placed in the public's
eye and the eye of the
academic community.
This will enhance
recruiting and attract
more quality students"

he plans to call TEA in
Austin to find out
something more specific.
Although the first sug-
gestion must be met by
May 1984 the others are to
be written up in a formal
report which is to be sent to
TEA by September 1984.
The TEA team also
recommended that the
library budget be increas-
ed slightly from 4.7 percent
to 5 percent of the total
general budget which will
help the library increase
the children's and adoles-
cent literature holdings to
2500 volumes each.

the trip is not a BSU func-
tion but is the first time
students have been en-
couraged to assist Green

which has a strong and ac-
tive role in working in that
part of the world.
Out of the nine students
making the trip five are
from Tyler.
