"What we are basically
looking for are students in-
terested in becoming com-
missioned officers in the
United States Army" Ma-
jor Green said. "We also
have very lucrative
scholarships which are an
added benefit."
"Army scholarships are
a choice morsel to have
. from the standpoint that
the tuition degree pro-
gram fees and activity
fees are paid in full. The
student is allowed $195 per
semester for books and
will also be alotted a $100 a
month allowance for
whatever is needed" he

The three colleges share a

there has been a joint cross
enrollment agreement of
the ROTC program.
Major Green noted that
ROTC cadets will be learn-
ing managerial and leader-
ship skills to include
military subjects that the
individual will need to have
for a basic knowledge as an
officer.
"And the ROTC offers
fun things as well in-
cluding repelling
backpacking canoeing
and of course the other
military field training that
we do."
"There are so many
facets of the ROTC pro-
gram subject matter that
is and scholarships
available that individuals
should feel free to come in
and inquire about the Army
ROTC" Major Green said.
"We're glad to be back
again and extend the pro-
gram to Howard Payne.on
behalf of Lt. Col. Breier
professor of military
science at Hardin-

Starting Monday Feb. 8
Howard Payne will be
hosting its annual Christian
Women's Seminar. The
sessions will be at 9:30 on
Tuesday and Thursday and
6:30 to 9:30 on Monday
through Thursday nights.
Susi Lockard will be the
primary speaker for the
seminar. She is a graduate
of Baylor University and of
Southwestern Theological
Seminary. She and her hus-
band David were appointed
to Rhodesia (now Zim-
babwe) by the Foreign Mis-
sion Board. While in
Rhodesia Susi served as
seminary teacher WMU
leader church developer
book store manager writer
and curriculum editor for
fifteen years.
The Foreign Mission
Board then asked David to
head the new training pro-
gram for newly appointed
missionaries. So for the
next fourteen years Susi
helped prepare newly ap-
pointed missionaries to live
and work in foreign lands.

President Lonna Hord
."eicomed back Senate
members and inducted a
new class president in the
first meeting.
Encouraging students to
participate Mrs. Hord
commented on the need of
the senators to be involved
in order to accomplish the
jobs set before them.
Sophomore Kyle Horton
was inducted as class
president by Mrs. Hord.
Horton and new Class Vice-
President Daniel Butler
were elected during a
special election held last
week.
Some question was rais-
ed about the number of
absenses allowed a senator
during a semester. The
rule is currently three per
term. The interpretation of
a "term" was questioned
by Mrs. Hord. She re-
quested the rule be
Lockard to
tions and bio-medical
ethics. Susi found her
ministry through her local
church mission trips
overseas and as telephone
policy new budget and graduation discussed
clarified to read that each
senator be allowed three
absences pei semester.
After much deliberation
Senate members decided to
continue to meet each Mon-
day at 5 p.m. Another time
was desired that would
enable every Senate
member to be present. As it
stands Senior Senator
Venee DeSoto will be the
only member unable to at-
tend the meetings. The
Senate voted unanimously
to grant DeSoto's absence
amnesty which would
enable her to continue all
other duties as a senator
except attendance at week-
ly meetings.
Mrs. Hord presented the
proposed budget for the
1988-89 school year to the
Senate. The budget was
given to the administration
for approval January 18.
'The new budget shows a
proposed increase of $1000
speak at
counselor for the battered
wives center.
Two and a half years age
the Baptist Sunday School
Board invited her to come
over last year. Mrs. Hord
commented on the fact that
Senate has not had a
budget increase in 15
.years but has experienced
a budget decrease. Includ-
ed in the proposal was a re-
quest for a book award or
stipend for both the SA
secretary and treasurer.
During open forum
Senior Teresa McCarter
asked about the possibility
of having a December
graduation ceremony to
replace the one held in
August.
"There are so many of us
finishing in December and
I think if you compare the
number of people finishing
in December to the number
finishing in August you'll
find it would probably be a
greater amount in
December " said
McCarter.
Mrs. Hord asked Senate
Secretary Cynthia Jenkins
CWS
as editor for Bible Sear-
chers Sunday School
materials for 5th and fh
graders. She has an
two books and many
tist periodicals.
Mrs. Lockard will be the
Chapel speaker for Thurs-
day Feb. 11.
Two other women that
will be speaking at the
seminar are Betty Baggett
and Mary Capenter. Betty
is a pastor's wife from the
First Baptist Church in
Dotham Alabama. She is a
widely-known conference
speaker for Christian
seminars. She will be
speaking in Chapel on
Tuesday Feb. 9.
Mary is a graduate of
Howard Payne and is cur-
rently seeking a master's
in religion from Hardin-
Simmons University. Her
husband David is a
member of the Board of
Trustees of Howard Payne.
Mrs. Faye Dozier Veda
Hodge Dorm Director will
be the convener for the
seminar.
"I really feel like this will
oe one of the best seminars
ever because of the quality
women speakers that we
have" said Dr. Robert
Smith coordinator of the
seminar.
to check with Dr. Hall
about the possible change.
The cancellation of Spr-
ing Fling was questioned
by Sophomore Senator
Elizabeth Frost. Mrs. Hord
confirmed the cancellation.
"According to Mrs. Har-
ris there wasn't enough
student participation to
justify calling off classes"
said Mrs. Hord.
Sophomore Senator Kyle
Cheatham asked why
students couldn't be
granted the day off
anyway.
According to Hord
Howard Payne is close to
being short of meeting
state requirements for
hours.
To replace Spring Fling
a weekend celebration is
being planned in conjunc-
tion with Stinger Daze call-
ed Splash Days.
