Allen Analyzes Convention Results
By Rockford E. Hart
Yes the news you've all been
waiting for. The full-blown account: all
the facts and sacred truths that until this
time have remained scathed by the
misinterpretations and reports of students
who are somewhat ignorant to the
situation. Yea verily: the results of the
106th annual session of the Baptist
General Convention of Texas which was
held at the Ferrell Special Events Center
in Waco.
The BGCT met from Monday.
November 1 1th to Wednesday November
13th discussing a veritable plethora of
topics and voting on items destined to
change our convention forever. Well
they did vote on some hefty stuff. One
of the major topics at hand in the BGCT
meeting was the electing of new officers.
The new BGCT executive officers are as
follows: Richard Maples President;
Harry Lucenay First Vice-President; and
Carolyn Bucy Second Vice-President.
This is a very important fact in that all
of the current executive council are now
moderates and this may account for
some of the BGCTs future decisions and
actions.
The most controversial and talked
about issue at the BGCT however was
the Baylor proposal. Now many are
confused on all that was entailed in this
proposal. Let' me try to clear up the
situation a little bit for you. First off
and probably the question most of you
wondered: No. Regardless of the results
Howard Payne would never have seen a
penny of BGCT money that may have
in any way shape or form been intended
to go to Baylor University. We do
occasionally however get some nice
hand-me-down's in the vay of dorm
furnishings from that university. The
Baylor proposal having been accepted
merely allows Baylor a little more
freedom from political ties to the BGCT
especially in the area of the appointing of
their Board of Trustees. Many conclude
the purpose from this was to-protect the
school from an ideological "takeover"
from fundamentalists seeking political
control.
Dr. Art Allen a Bible instructor of
three years here at Howard Payne offers
his view on the vote over the Baylor
proposal: "This was a very big vote.
Texas Baptists are now allowing Baylor
to take the road they want to take. . . and
they've already chartered their seminary."
The seminary to which he refers is the
George W. Truett Seminary named after
the former pastor of First Baptist Dallas
a' "champion of separation of church and
state one of the principles upon which
Baptists are founded" according to Dr.
Allen. As was previously stated the
charter for the George W. Truett
Seminary has already been acquired by
Baylor University and the plans are now
in progress.

Jackson Guards HPtJ Hen House
By Vicki Pierce
Don Jackson Howard Payne
University's registrar describes himself
as "the fox that guards the henhouse."
He was referring to the fact that it is his
responsibility to insure that the
academic policies of the university are
followed in accordance with the
university catalog.
In a recent interview Jackson
discussed several topics ranging from
upcoming registration to degree plans.
He also spoke of several changes that
have taken place or are going to take
place in the near future both within the
univejsity and within legal policies
concerning education.
Jackson described the university's
recent improvements in the registration
proce'ss. The implementation of
computerized registration now allows
returning students with pre-scheduled
classes to complete registration in about
10 minutes. The results of this new
process were seen in this fall's
registration and HPU is hoping to
continue to "clean-up" the procedure in
order to make it even more efficient by
spring.
