for weeks now. Stubby especially;
but then he was always thnt way
never wnntlng to lay low until
things had cleared. He'd treated
the boys fair enough they could-
n't deny that but Jobs wore
senrce now. The kind thnt were
safe. Anyone would be a sap to
come out in the open and stick his
neck out. That just wasn't his
Steve Browdy's way of doing
things and that accounted for his
success. He had to admit thnt he
was slacking up n little but no
one would say thnt Steve Browdy
had lost his nerve that is to his
face. Yeah the boys had been
smart stringing along with him
nt least they weren't griping their
heads off behind bars.
Well wasn't much use of him
thinking about such things tonight.
Not on New Year's Eve. The bays
were all out having a hot time of
interpreted as on approval of nil
the legislator from Texas and his
associates have done.
Students often voiced their dis
satisfaction with the methods and
results of the committee it was
reported by the national staff of
interviewers that the Surveys uses.
The War Whoop cooperates In con-
ducting these polls with Gertrude
Ricbold as local interviewer on the
McMurry campus.
Asked "Do you think the gov
ernment should provide money to
continue the Dies committee for
another year?" students every
where answrcd YES 56 per cent
NO 26 per cent. There was a large
number 17 per cent who had no
opinion many admitting that they
had never heard of the committee
The Surveys finds that out of
nearly three dozen subjects It has
used in its polls this Is one of the
least known. A majority of those
who did know about it however
believe that the Investigation of
isms In this country Is desirable
and necessary.
The committee recently made
news again when its members dis
agreed on the nature of its report
to Congress one of the points In
controversy being the American
Student Union Bnd its alleged con
nections with communism. A year
ago the Surveys found that only
one out or every ten students to-
licvcil there had been any attempt
to influence him with fascist soc-
ialist or communist propaganda on
his dampus.
By sections those wishing tho
Dies committee continued were:
New England 44 per cent
Middle Atlantic . .. 59 per cent
East Central 54 per cent
West Central 56 per cent
South 30 per cent
Fnr West 60 per cent .

To Hear Singer
Donald Dixon young baritone
was presented In concert at the
high school auditorium Wednesday
night by tho Abilene Civic Music
Association of which McMurry stu-
dents are members.
Many McMuny students Bokc
enthusiastically about the concert.
His appearance here was as one
of the guest artists of the season
arranged by tho Abilene Civic
Music Association In connection
with the NBC concert service in
booking famous artists for con-
cert tours.
During his early school days his
music teacher would not let him
sing with the rest of the children
because his voice was too loud and
it drowned out the others.
He had to put off studying music
and find a job so he took one sell-
ing cigars and cigarettes. Later he
became a worker in the Otis Steel
plant in Cleveland Ohio. Here for
the first time he took voice les-
sons from his teacher Warren
Whitney.
When he was just out of Cleve-
land High School he married one
of his schoolmates Bculah Baylor.
They now have a six year old son
Kay Don.
Donald Dixon first attracted at-
tention with his voice In 1932
when he won the Atwatcr Kent
audition prize for young singers
not yet lounched on their careers.
In 1036 he went to New York to
continue his voice studies in the
Julliar School of Music. His ap-
pearance In several operatic pro
ductions at this Institution brought
him to the attention of the Metro-
politan Opera Association which
engaged him for Its 1937 singing
season. He now has a contract
with NBC and Is on his concert
tour over the United States.
