By Bruce Unruo
War Whoop Co-editor
(NOTE! In the next three Is-
sue of the WAR WHOOP we
will examine a unl(iie item at
McMurry College: the Social
Hall and the unique prob-
lems facing It.)
For a two-yenr-cilcl; McMurry
Student Government's little

an ulcer may be about to form
It hcoiuh thai the weekly
dance sponsored by the organi-
zation whoHepurpooe is "to serve
McMurry students" has become
Saturday nights "hanK-out" for
everyone except McMurry stu-
dents Why is it that a McMurry
dance ia no longer utilized by
McMurry students? Why is tin-
Social Hall so attractive to stu-
dents from every other campus
except McMurry? Why is the
MSG upending hundreds of dol-
lars upkeepinK a facility that
McMurry students are refusing
to support?
"Student support of the Social
Hall ia a primary concern of the
MSG" said their president
Mark Scars. "It's very difficult
to figure out what McMurry
students want ua to do When we
figure it out we'll certainly do it.
That's our purpose!"
"What McMurry students
want" scorns to he this: A weekly
dance in the Social Hall made up

most ly of McMurry students nnd
in an atmosphere with enough
room to dance
But what thev want and
what the will do ma be two
different things
"It's the support we're warned
about" Sears continued "It
won't do us any good to restrict
the dances to McMurry people if
they don't show up."
In order to test .McMurry sup-
port the MSG is taking a huge
loss of income this month Last
weekend the dance was open to
McMurrv people nnd those high
school students visiting the
campus only
And this Snturdny night
(Feb iM). the Social Hall will be
open to McMurry students and
their guebts only Plus all ad-
mission will w free
"If this is what McMurry stu-
dents really want I hope they'll
show us their support by attend-
ing. But if there's just talk and
no action we'll have no choice
but to go back to the old
method" Sears said
The "old method" allowed
McMurry students into the
dance free and charged students
from other colleges $1.50.
"It does cost us something to
run the Social Hall" Sears exp-
lained. "But with the number of
students from other schools that
come we're making money "
This money is reinvested into
the Social Hall through the pur-

"We just Ixaight a new light-
ing system for the ceiling over
Christmas." Sears said "We
have to spend it We're a non-
profit organization "
Some of the money is going to
other student-related functions
the MSG is planning
"I don't understand why
McMurry people don't support
the dances" Sears stated.
"We've got something at
McMurry unique for a church
school. The Social Hall is the
perfect place for people who like
to dance nnd don't like the at-
mosphere with nil the drinking
nnd smoking."
The Social Hall lcgan in the
Fall of 1976 with the purpose of
"giving McMurry students
something to do on weekends.
Our main concern was with
McMurry students nnd still is.
"I've heard a lot of talk that
McMurry people don't like the
other schools tnking over the
dance So 1 hope they'll respond
when we limit it this Saturday
night. We don't wnnt to elimi-
nate the other students. But if
the demand is there and the
support follows that's probably
what we'll have to do" Sears
concluded
