Convocation speech stresses 'road to
McMuriy College students got
a short course in ancient philoso-
phy with a modern application
during spring convocation Tues-
day morning.
The teachings of Confucius were
recalled and expounded upon by
Dr. Thomas Kim president in his
address before a full house in
Radford Auditorium. Kim told the
gathering of students faculty and
staff not to be caught up in the
popular "Don't Worry Be Happy"
philosophy but rather to think
deeply about the words of Confu-

The McMurry College Jazz
Ensemble will travel to five dries
to perform during its annual
spring tour January 31 through
February 4 according to director
Tom Fairlic.
The Jazz Ensemble will perform
works by such well-known musi-
cal artists as Dizzy Gillespie
Maynard Ferguson Chic Corca
and George Gershwin said Fair-

Alum succeeds Kimbrell
Brownficld High School coach
Ron Holmes will become the new
head basketball coach for the
McMurry College Indians upon
the retirement of current head
coach Hcrshel Kimbrell Dr. Tho-
mas Kim announced Wednesday.
Holmes who played for
McMurry College from 1973 to
1977 under Kimbrell has been a
highly successful high school bas-
ketball coach compiling an over-
all record of 147-59 while coach-
ing at Clarendon and Brownficld.
Holmes also has coached at
McMurry as an assistant to Kim-
brell. He was a graduate assistant
basketball coach for the 1979-80
team that captured the TIAA
championship and served as ten-
nis coach and as an assistant bas-
ketball coach for thel982-83 TIAA
championship team.
Holmes will offidally take over
the head basketball job on June 1
of this year from Kimbrell who
has compiled a career record of
442-409 record during his 31 years
at McMurry. Kimbrell's record
ranks him as the eleventh win-
ningest active coach in NAIA.
Holmes attended Van Horn
High School and graduated in
1973. He received the bachelor of
science degree from McMurry

Kim urged his audience not to

to recruit new students and also
promotes the annual Di-Statc Choir
and Band a week-long camp held
during the summer at McMurry
for high school students who want
to improve their musical skills.
The group will begin its tour
with a concert at First United
Methodist Church of Odessa at
5:45 p.m. January 31.
On February 1 the Jazz En-
semble will perform at Andrews
High School at 8:30 a.m. then
travel to First United Methodist
College in 1977 and earned a
master of education degee from
Abilene Christian University in
1984.
He began his coaching career as
a football and basketball coach at
the junior high level for one year
before moving to Lamcsa High
School in 1978-79 as an assistant
coach in football and basketball.
Holmes moved to Clarendon as
head basketball coach in 1980 and
compiled a record of 33-19 a dis-
trict championship and a number
17 final state ranking. He also was
an assistant football and head girl's
track and field coach at Claren-
don. The football team won two
district championships and one
regional championship while the
track team won district and re-
gional championships.
After a year in private business
Holmes in 1984 became the head
basketball coach at Brownficld
High School where he has won
114 games while losing only 40.
Holmes' teams have won two
district championships three bi-

berth in the final four at the state
basketball tournament.

liam N. Short professor of mod-
ern languages received a $1000

Two concerts arc set for Febru-
ary 2. The group will play at
Roswcll High School at 7:20 a.m.
and then travel to Raton to per-
form at the Schulcr Theatre at 7
p.m. The Raton concert is spon-
sored by the First United Method-
ist Church of Raton.
The Jazz Ensemble's final con-
cert of the spring tour will be at 2
p.m. at First United Methodist
Church in Dumas.
His Brownficld teams have fin-
ished in the top ten state rankings
twice in 1987-88 and 1988-89 and
held the number one ranking for
six weeks.
Holmes has been honored as
the District 3-AAA Coach of the
Year in 1987-88 and 1988-89 and
was named the AAA Coach of the
YcarbyihcLubbock Avalanche-Journal
both of those years. He was
nominated as Texas High School
Coach of the Year by the Texas
Association of Basketball Coaches
in 1987-88 and 1 988-89 and earned
the McMurry College Alumni
Coach of the Year award in 1987-
88. Holmes isamembcrof the Texas
Assodation of BaskctballCoaches
the Texas Association of High
School Coaches and the Texas
StateTeachers Association. He is a
past member of the State TEAMS
Testing Board and has served as
state chairman of the Officials
Committee for the Texas Associa-
tion of Basketball Coaches. In
addition he served on the All-
Region and All-State committees
for TABC and as a member of the
TABC Executive Council for Re-
gion 1 A-AA-AAA.

faculty members recognized na-
tionally by the Scars-Roebuck
Foundation for resourcefulness
and leadership as a private college
educator.
Short in his sixth year at
McMurry has developed the col-
lege's international studies pro-
gram to include trips to Mexico
and Europe A trip to Japan also is
being planned.

A 1965 graduate of Harding
College Short earned a master's
degree from North Texas State
University and a doctorate from
Rice University. He also studied
abroad extensively and has re-
ceived a grant from the United
Methodist Church's Board of
Higher Education and Ministry to
study at the University of Geneva
this summer.
Tuesday's convocation was the
ceremonial bcginnlngofthcspring
semester although classes began
January 16. Registration contin-
