McMurry visited by the spirit of Christmas present
By BJ Jones
McMurry is dreaming of a
light Christmas.
"It's a nice touch. I think we
should do it all year" said jun-
ior Alex Eyssen.
Lights for the "Second An-
nual McMurry Christmas" now
grace more than 125 trees from
Sayles Blvd. through the quad-
rangle and around the
Jay-Rollins Library.
The addition of 100 more
strings of white twinkling lights
allowed the University to deco-
rate 38 more trees than in 1995.
An overwhelming response of
donations was made to
McMurry by churches in the
Northwest Texas and New
Mexico Conferences allowing
for the additional light strings.

"I feel that it promotes com-
munity spirit both within the
University and Abilene as a
whole" said senior Wendy
Warrick.
Chanters members with the
help of Dr. Dawn Willis associ-
ate professor of music led the
crowd in several popular Christ-
mas carols. The carillon played
soft Christmas music as students
and faculty alike enjoyed re-
freshments and the joy
Christmas brings to campus.
The lights however did not
hang themselves. Students were
needed to beautify the campus
for the holidays and make
"McMurry Christmas" a suc-
cess. Shad Rasco associate direc-
tor of annual giving and
"McMurry Christmas" coordi-
nator invited all members of
social clubs or organizations to
join with the Freshman Seminar
DeLuca hypnotizes entertains
classes on November 21 to as-
sist in hanging lights.
Rasco reported being happy
with the turnout despite the
wintry weather.
Other members of the com-
munity would not be outdone
by students as Friday Novem-
ber 22 revealed. Administrators
faculty and staff were in the
quad placing the finishing
touches on trees throughout the

area.
"We're not going to let those
kids have all the fun" said Jen-
nifer Bishop office manager for
advancement as she checked
lights for malfunctions.
"It's a challenge to the entire
community for individuals to
find it within themselves to
make time in their busy sched-
ules to help out their school"
said Rasco.

"Sit back relax close your
eyes and lose control."
These were the basic instruc-
tions Tom DeLuca had to offer
McMurry students on Dec. 2.
With these qualifying state-
ments DeLuca had no problem
ob taining volunteers for his pre-
sentation of "Theatre of
Imagination."
He has been a topic on PBS
with Charlie Rose "CNN Show
Business Today" and the syn-
dicated "Live with Regis and
Kathie Lee." He has been re-
viewed by People magazine
Rolling Stone magazine and the
New York Post.
Now he has brought his show
to McMurry University.
On December 2 McMurry stu-
dents were invited to attend his
program in Radford Audito-
rium. Those who attended
could easily see why he was
voted the National Association
for Campus Activities' (N AC A)
College Entertainer of the Year.
After performing several
magic tricks for the crowd
DeLuca and members of the
McMurry activities council pre-
pared for the featured
performance the hypnotizing
of McMurry students.

Approximately 150 students
from eight area high schools and
three universities gathered to
debate the future of the world at
the 11th Annual West Texas
Model United Nations Confer-
ence Dec. 5-6.
The students are given the op-
portunity to compete in
sessions. At closing ceremonies
Cooper High School and
Hardin-Simmons University
delegations were awarded for
their outstanding performances.
The conference was an au-
thentic simulation of the United
Nations. Dr. John Farrenkopf
faculty advisor said "I fully ex-
pect that it would be an
educational experience for high
school students.... and allows
McMurry to showcase itself for
possible future McMurry stu-
dents in a complex organized
simulation of international af-
fairs." Model UN provides an op-
portunity for a core group of
McMurry students to become
leaders and organizers by put-
ting this and all future Model
UNs into play.
McMurry began its confer-
ence in 1986. Former professor
of political science Dr. Mike El-
Attrache is the founder of
McMurry's Model UN and the
West Texas Model UN Confer-
ence. Dr. Paul Fabrizio is a new
addition to the MUN tradition.
Fabrizio competed as an under-
graduate in Southern California.
But Model UN is not over for
McMurry after Dec. 6.
McMurry selects a delegation
that competes in February at the
Hardin-Simmons Model UN.
Students go on to compete at
national and international lev-
els. McMurry's delegation has
competed from California to
Canada. Students enroll in Po-
litical Science 3399 and receive
three hours of honors political
science credit for competing.
Students involved included:
BJ Jones Secretary-General;
Stacey Nixon Under-Secretary-General;
Daniel Alexander
Political and Security; Debra
Bawcom Security Council; Tim
Kennedy Special Political; Matt
Nichols EcoFin; Olyn Poole;
