New Chapin Art
Building dedicated
Dedication cer-
emonies for the new Noel
R. and Anita Henry Chapin
Art Building were held at
1:30 p.m. Friday January
21 2000 at the new facil-
ity on Hunt Street just be-
hind the Amy Graves Ryan
Fine Arts Building.
The public was in-
vited to attend the dedi-
cation ceremonies and a
reception following imme-
diately afterward in the
Ryan lobby.
The Chapin Build-
ing will house ceramics
pottery and jewelry as
well as office and studio
space. Mr. Chapin and
other family members at-
tended the ceremonies.
Mrs. Chapin passed away
on February 3 1999.
New professor

This fall McMurry
University received a wel-
come addition to the Edu-
cation department. Dr.
Dana Smith is the Associ-
ate Professor of Curricu-
lum and Instruction. Be-
fore coming to McMurry
Dr. Smith was a graduate
assistant at Oklahoma
State University while she
finished her doctorate de-
gree in curriculum and
instruction. She received
her master's at Southwest-
ern Oklahoma State Uni-
versity. Dr. Smith also
taught third grade for six

Anita Henry
Chapin a native of May
Texas attended McMurry
in the late 1920s and cred-
ited Gypsy Ted Sullivan
Wylie with building and
encouraging Chapin's love
for the arts. Mrs. Chapin
was a high school senior
at the opening class of
McMurry Academy before
attending McMurry Col-
lege for two years. Mrs.
Chapin's father W.S.
Henry manager of the
South Texas Lumber Com-
pany in Abilene built a
home in 1926 at 749
Elmwood where she re-
sided during part of her
years at McMurry. Mrs.
Chapin was a noted sup-
porter of the arts and was
listed in Who's Who of
added to Education department
years in Oklahoma City
before embarking on her

professors at Oklahoma
State on a grant to inte-
grate reading and math at
all education levels.
Here at McMurry
Dr. Smith teaches general
curriculum classes lan-
guage arts and science.
This semester she is teach-
ing science classes and is
also involved in the Pro-
fessional Development
school here at McMurry.

Seton Hall fire causes concern
about McMurry dorms

Is the place that
traditional students call
their home away from
home a safe place to live?
Are there enough precau-
tions that have been taken
into consideration to en-
sure the safety of dorm
residents?
After what hap-
pened in South Orange
N.J. at Seton Hall Univer-
sity students and parents
have the right to become
suspicious about the
safety of dormitories. In
Boland Hall "the dormi-
tory of disaster" three
students were killed six
critically burned and 50
others injured. The cause
of death and injury was
mostly due to smoke inha-
lation. Since September of
1999 there had been 18
false alarms and students
did not take the real fire
alarm seriously and the
dorm contained no sprin-
klers. Fortunately for
McMurry students there
have been nowhere near
18 false alarms. If we
there had been many stu-
dents might be skeptical
about leaving the comfort
of their rooms. The
