Did you know that Meg
Ryan Renec Zellweger and
Denzcl Washington all hold
communicationdegrees?Let
us not overlook renowned
director Spike Lee basket-
ball legend and success-
ful businessman "Magic"
Johnson late night talk
show host David Letterman
along with numerous other
politicians opera stars
and the sixth president of
the United States John
Quincy Adams. All are
graduates with degree in
communication.
Such a wide sampling of
successful postgraduate
disciplines only succeed in
confirming communica-
tion's claim to fame as one
of the most highly regarded
undergraduate degrees. In
2004 the National Center
of Education Statistics
recorded that communica-
tion was the ioh highest
enrolled postsecondary field
of study in the United States
with 433000 students.
We kick off our "Careers
Miniseries" with a piece
for communication majors.
One of the most versatile
areas of study the commu-
nication program at I lardin-
Simmons offers empha-
sis in three fields: Speech
Communication Public
Relations and Advertising
and Mass Media.
There are countless
careers which can be started
from a degree as generic
and user-friendly as com-
munication. We will take a
look at some national sta-
tistics about careers in com-
munication discuss several
popular career options and
walk you through intern-
ships and opportunities that
HSU provides for their com-
munication majors.
According to the
National Communication
Association's (NCA) com-

Hardin-Simmons
University has just com-
pleted another Parents'
Weekend that was held
on the 22nd and 23rd
of September 2007.
Students welcomed their
families onto the Forty
Acres for some "good ole'
fun" where they attended
the HSU football game
and showed their families
around campus.
HSU students were
also excited to see free
food before the game.
Student Activities gra-
ciously fed families before
the families had the plea-
sure of watching the HSU
Cowboys defeat Louisiana
College 41 to 34.
This weekend parents
were not too concerned
as to how their sons and
daughters were doing in
school - their concerns
had more to do with how
they liked and were deal-
ing with the new environ-
ment and surroundings.
When Addie Vest was
asked why her parents
love parents' weekend
she said "They like to see
what my dorm looks like
now and what I am up
to."

majors have seen a 28.7
salary increase the highest
rate of increase compared to
18.2 for education majors
and 21.7 for majors in
social work and protective
services. In general aca-
demic fields the arts and
humanities sector recorded
the second highest increase
in salary at 25.6 falling
short of the 26.8 increase
seen by the social sciences.
The NCA provides a list
of careers that graduates

- Simmons Parents Visit Students
For Family Weekend
Parents' weekend is
also described as the last
opportunity that stu-
dents have to see their
parents until the next
break or trip home. When
asked freshman Danielle
Bridges said that she will
only be returning home
next on the twenty-sixth
of October.
Students are settling
into the new groove of col-
lege and are finally calling
Abilene their "home away
from home". Not only are
parents elated to see their
student whenever they
can they are also glad to
see that their students are
happy at HSU.
All in all fall 2007s
Parents Weekend was a
major success. Not only
did parents get to see
their children they also
got to see how happy they
are.
College is a time where
one works hard and suc-
ceeds. Being happy all the
time is never possible
but to the parents seeing
their young ones happy at
HSU was a gift in itself.
Courtesy ot
fessors and advisors. Most
of them know more about
the industry and available
opportunities to help stu-
dents trying to break into
the industry. Be proactive!
Make appointments with
other professionals in the
career field that you are
interested in and ask them
about the path they took to
get there.
Another step to take while
in school is to continually
work on assembling a port-
folio of information show-
casing your talents. Writing
samples audio and visual
projects or anything you
have worked on that you
feel is representative of your
ability are prime examples
of top-notch portfolio sam-
ples. This will also make it
easier and eliminate the mad
scramble to organize materi-
als right before an interview.
You will have everything
ready and at hand demon-
strating responsibility and
organizational ability.
Also remember that your
professors and mentors are
the best resources for letters
of recommendation. Get to
know them and they will
be more likely to have you

in mind as they come across
openings for positions that
you may be qualified for
or interested in. Related to
that when asking for letters
of recommendation pro-
vide the writer with more
information on you such as
a resume or education and
professional history.
Membership in the NCA
opens a lot of doors that
would not normally be
encountered. They provide
various resources that could
prove helpful in your job
search such as job place-
ment services databases
and tips on building a com-
munications career.
For those specializing in
public relations and adver-
tising Hardin-Simmons
University sponsors a
student chapter of the
Public Relations Society of
America a society that aims
to according to HSU's web-
site "cultivate a favorable
and mutually advantageous
relationship between stu-
dents and professional pub-
lic relations practitioners."
Finally one of the most
profitable and practical
steps to take in pursu-
ing a career in coinmu-
nication is an internship.
Communication majors are
eligible and encouraged
to enroll in COMM 4389
Communication Internship
during their junior or senior
year. Meet with a commu-
nication advisor the semes-
ter before you plan to do
the internship to discuss
possibilities.
The following businesses
have worked with interns
from the HSU Department of
Communication: The Grace
Museum Abilene Reporter
News KRBC Television
Zachry Associates The
National Center for
Children's Illustrated
Literature KTXS Television
Cumulus Broadcasting
KTAB Television and Clear
Channel Broadcasting.
As you can see there are
many ways to go about get-
ting what you want as a
communication major and
future professional. There
is no reason why you should
not make it in the career you
desire so make an appoint-
ment with your advisor to
talk about further steps you
can take.
