Notes

Photograph of 205 W. Pine taken from the road. Photo was taken for the Historic Resources Survey of Palestine, Texas 1989-1991. Palestine’s most intense period of development occurred during the late 19th and early 20th centuries when a construction boom transformed the city’s neighborhoods into larger, more densely concentrations of domestic buildings. The 2-story house at this address reflects this trend. The building has a strong vertical emphasis, turned-wood woodwork and a combination hipped-and-gabled roof, all of which are suggestive of the Queen Anne style. The house has changed only minimally since its construction about 1900. Though this house was probably built around the turn of the century, city directory research was only able to trace its occupancy back to 1926, when James C. Stevens and his wife Lillie lived here. Mr. Stevens was a conductor for the I&GN Railroad, and later for Missouri Pacific. He died in the late 1930s, but his wife continued to live here into the 1940s.
