VALEDICTION

And so to you, dear heart--
I find myself bereft of word
to say more.
Dear heaT, I shall wait upon
this shore
And hope will--must fill all my
days,
For I have nothing more--
Perhaps less.
Perhaps the emptiness which surrounds
Me now as I remember us:
One to the other bound in silence
By something unspeakably pure;
Perhaps it is this that makes my
heart cry out against the harsh
Sound of waves breaking on the shore.
Have I no more or less?
Must time bear the message
Or will pain?
I have but little in this world
that brings beauty and light
into a corner of darkness and fear;
I have you, a love,
no more near--
Yet ever present in heart and mind,
I see now a rainbow through a tear;
I have a love,
How do I now despair?
I hold in my hand only the phantom of a heart,
pain fills the emptiness
and I play the part!
Youth, laughter, color, golden shades of daylight,
all phantoms, a role
For one to whom love
is only a nomadic minstrel,
A wanderer, a singer of airy tunes,
to be seen and heard,
yet always to remain anonymous.
