A special telegram from Arkansas City

the Panhandle and Indian Territory stato
that thousands of cattle perished during
the blizzard of last week The weather at
many points was the coldest of the season
Among the shipments from Fort Collins
Col last week were five cars of No 1

Some cattle for April delivery were sold
at Fort Collins Col the other day for

tst sale that has been made in Larimer
county for many days There were 101

Only a few cattle are reported in bad
shape in the southeast corner of Colorado
It is the opinion of most of the stockmen
that the late snows have really done but
slight damage and these only in isolated
instances This snow will make the grass
come quick and grow heavy
Over on White river Colorado at tho
TT ranch some five hundred head of cattle
have been fed all winter and not a single
hoof died It took a good deal of hay to pro-
vide for them but the company had wisely
made ample provision for an emergency of
this kind and have enough hay on hand to
last several weeks yet
In the face of depressing circumstances
the brood sow may prove to be tho most
profitable animal on tho farm before this
year closes About tho worst move tho
farmer may make will bo tho neglect of his
brood sow This is an off year in the btsi
ness but the man who keeps steadily on his
work with his breeding slock will come out
best in tbe end
It is found that the longer young hogs aro
fed alfalfa hay mixed with their slop tho
better they like it They clean up their
troughs much quicker I hero has been
no compulsion used in the way of short
rations to force an appetite for hay but
the taste has been cultivated for the hay
by mixing It with food that we know thpy
were accustomed to and consumed readily
A stock item in the last issue of the Fort
Collins Courier makes a correction by stat
ing that over 4000 head of fat cattle have
been shipped from that point since tho
first of January last instead of 100 car-
loads as stated last week and from ten to
twenty carloads are still being sent away
every week Many feeders have shipped
earlier than they intended to for tho reason
that hay is getting scarce and higher in
price than they can afford to pay There
aro yet a good many moro carloads to bo
sent away

There are quito a number of steer buyers
now operating in Southern New Mexico
and several sales are reported All trades
made are for early delivery and the ruling
prices seem to be about 15 to 1S for twos
and threes and up The encouraging outlook
for the cattle business has resulted in their
being few oflVrs of young steers for sale
and few outfits that can afford to hold will
have any yearlings on the market this sea-
son
Speaking of local cattle interests J H
