Another retired member of The News staff

Dallas Iigh School (now Crozier Technical
High School). His work at The News began in
1902 as an extra in the mailing room and in
1901 he became a permanent enmploye as ap-
prentice pressman. 'T'ransferring to the com-
posing room in 1906, he received his union
card in 1910. lie advanced to assistant fore-
man in 1916, foreman in 1928, chairman of the
mechanical board in 1933 and production man-
ager, supervising all mechanical departments,
in 1937. 1ie was elected a director in 1940.JACK B. KRUEGER
Jack B. Krueger
A native of San Antonio, the managing
editor of The News was educated in public
schools there and at the University of Texas.
After graduation, his newspaper experience
began as a cub reporter on the San Antonio
Light. Eight years of experience as an Asso-
ciated Press editor in Dallas and San Fran-
cisco preceded his appointment as city editor
of The News in 1944.
Mr. Krueger became assistant managing
editor in 1954 and managing editor in 1957.
lie is active in the American Society of News-
paper Editors, the Associated Press Managing
Editors Association, a member of the Advisory
Board, American Press Institute, Columbia
University; and other professional organiza-
tions. He was elected to the board of directors
of The News in 1960.
Sol Katz
The circulation manager of The News was
born in Corsicana, Texas, but moved with his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Katz, to Dallas
and was educated in the Dallas public school
system, being graduated from high school in
1932.
His association with The News began ear-
lier, as a carrier of the paper, and he became
a permanent employe as a 16-year-old in 1929
on a phone desk in the circulation department.
He advanced rapidly to district manager, zone
manager, city circulation manager and, in
1950. became circulation manager. He was
elected to the board of directors in 1960.
During Mr. Katz' tenure, The News has
attained the largest circulation, daily and
Sunday, in Texas. He also is active in news-

culatlon Managers Association, of which he is
a past president, and International Circulation
Managers Association.
